New Student Orientation


New Student Orientation (NSO) is a half-day program for admitted incoming freshmen and transfer students. NSO is an essential learning experience to start your first year off right! Orientation sessions are offered at all three ASU-Newport campuses: Jonesboro, Marked Tree, and Newport. During orientation you will learn what classes to take, how to register, and the resources available to help you succeed.  Additionally, you'll receive personalized advising. Please bring some form of ID either your driver’s license or military ID in order for you to receive your official ASU-Newport ID.

There is no fee associated with attending orientation at one of our campuses. On the campus of your choice, we will help you make connections and start feeling comfortable.  Choose a time and location that is convenient for you.  You may attend a new student orientation at any campus and register for classes at another campus, but we would strongly recommend attending an orientation on the campus you will be taking classes. 

New Student Orientation will occur on an individual basis before the Spring 2017 Semester.  Please call the campus you plan on attending, to setup your private New Student Orientation.

Make sure that you have submitted the following items to the Admissions Office: 

  • Official college transcripts for ALL colleges that you attended
  • Final High School Transcript (for freshman who have never attended college)
  • ALL ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER scores (for freshman and Transfer students wishing to take English I and/or College Algebra). Need to take a placement exam? Click here to register.
  • Proof of two (2) Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) shots

Financial Aid:

  • Students entering ASUN Spring 2017 and Summer 2017, complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA. Students entering ASUN Fall 2017, complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA. Click here to visit the FAFSA website.

New Student Orientation FAQ

Is it ok to bring a companion to orientation?
Yes.  Bring a family member or friend.

Does the school accommodate students with disabilities or have disability services available?
Yes, our school accommodates students with disabilities. For more information on registering with the Office of Disability Services, please contact Cheryl Cross at 870-512-7742.

Can I take a tour on the same day as the orientation?
Yes!  We would love to show you the campus and our programs.

Do I need to have a major established before orientation?
Yes, a major is an important decision and allows us to assign the correct advisor to you.

Do I need to have my FAFSA completed before orientation?
Yes, having a FAFSA completed allows financial aid staff to determine what financial aid; whether Pell Grants, scholarships, Career Pathways, or student loans you will be eligible to receive.  If you need assistance completing a FAFSA, contact our financial aid department at 870-512-7835 to make an appointment. 

How long does the orientation last?
Orientation will last approximately 4 hours.

Is the orientation necessary/required if I have been to college before?
No, but it makes the transition into ASU-Newport easier.

What needs to be done before I step into orientation?
FAFSA and all required admissions documents should be completed and submitted to ASU-Newport.

Do I sign up for classes before or after orientation?
Either way is fine, but it is better that you meet with your advisor at orientation to make sure you’re in the right classes

Can I get assistance with signing up for classes at orientation?
Yes, this is part of the process in orientation.

Do we create our student ID cards during orientation?
Yes, that is why we ask you to bring a photo ID such as Driver’s license or military ID.

What if my schedule doesn’t permit me to attend any of the available dates of orientation?
