Natish's Story
Natish Thomas recently overcame the last hurdle in her pursuit of her GED. Her commitment
to reaching her goal paid off last December when she passed her last exam. Thomas
began taking classes at the ASUN-Jonesboro Adult Education Center at the end of 2020.
To complicate things, the Covid pandemic had started earlier that year. However, despite
some starts and stops, Thomas persevered. She said that she was encouraged by text
messages from her teachers, Daniel Lee and Greg Slayton, to come back to class to
work on getting her diploma. In the meantime, Thomas enrolled in the ADWORC Program
through ASUN-Jonesboro and earned several certificates including a Bronze Work Keys
Certificate, OSHA10 Certificate, Forklift Certification, and Basic Life Support (CP)
Certification. She also participated in the Teknimedia/Computer Literacy Program
where she earned IC3 Digital Literacy Certifications. Thomas is very outgoing, and
she connected with Career Service Providers at the ASUN-Jonesboro Adult Education
Center, which led to her being selected for the Work Experience Program through Workforce.
Work Experience is a program that promotes good work habits/skills and provides help
for individuals to gain full time employment. As a result of being accepted into the
Work Experience Program, Thomas started working in the ASUN-Jonesboro Adult Education
career closet, using her organizational skills. This position eventually included
clerical duties. After the Work Experience Program ended, Thomas applied and was hired
for a part-time paraprofessional position at the ASUN-Jonesboro Adult Education Center.
For others who may be thinking of completing their education, Thomas said that her
secret to success was to "prioritize".
