Receive Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- The VA will determine your benefits and send you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
- Important: Email the COE to the ASUN School Certifying Official before registering for courses.

- Enroll in courses for the specific semester in which you wish to use your benefits.

Complete the ASU-Newport VA Enrollment Certification Request Form
- After registering for courses, complete the ASU-Newport VA Enrollment Certification Request Form. Click here to access the form.
- Note: This form should be completed after registration; if done beforehand, it will be
rejected.

Certification by ASUN School Certifying Officer
- Once the completed form is received, the ASUN School Certifying Officer will certify
your enrollment with the VA.

Ways to Apply for Benefits
Online: Applications for Veterans benefits can be completed online through the Department of Veterans Affairs website at benefits.va.gov/gibill.
In-person: Visit the Veterans Certifying Officials office in the One Stop Center on the Newport Campus, 7648 Victory Blvd, Newport, Arkansas.
Phone: For automated telephone certification, call 1-877-823-2378. For address changes only, call 1-877-838-2778.
Applicants under Chapter 30
Eligibility:
- At least two (2) years active duty, three (3) years active duty, or two (2) years active duty plus four (4) years Reserves.
Application Process:
- New applicants: Complete VA form 22-1990 at benefits.va.gov/gibill.
- Transfer students/changing majors: Complete VA form 22-1995.
Applicants under Chapter 33 (Post 9/11)
Eligibility:
- Service members who served on active duty for at least 90 aggregate days after 9/10/01.
Application Process:
- New applicants: Complete VA form 22-1990 at benefits.va.gov/gibill.
- Transfer students/changing majors: Complete VA form 22-1995.
Applicants under Chapter 1606/1607 (Reserves)
Eligibility:
- Chapter 1606: Completion of initial active duty training and active reservist with a 6-year obligation.
- Chapter 1607: 90 days or more active-duty support of contingency operation or full-time National Guard duty responding to a national emergency.
Application Process:
- New applicants: Complete VA form 22-1990 at benefits.va.gov/gibill.
- Transfer students/changing majors: Complete VA form 22-1995.
Additional Benefit:
- National Guard and Reservists are eligible for Federal Tuition Assistance administered by the Department of Defense. Contact your unit Administrator or the Education Office at Camp Robinson (Ft. Roots) in North Little Rock.
Applicants under Chapter 35 (Dependents)
Eligibility:
- Veteran’s death or permanent and total disability as a result of a service-related injury, as determined by the VA.
Application Process:
- New applicants: Complete VA form 22-5490 at benefits.va.gov/gibill.
- Transfer students/changing majors: Complete VA form 22-5495.

Certificate of Eligibility: All applicants for GI-Bill benefits must submit their Certificate of Eligibility to the VA Certifying Official’s office. This letter states your benefit percentage and eligibility period.

Fry Scholarship: Available to surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. Contact the VA Certifying Official for more details.
Applying for TA Benefits
Tuition Assistance (TA): TA is a Department of Defense (DoD) program. VA does not administer TA. Contact the ASU-Newport Financial Aid Office for more information.
Return of Unearned Tuition Assistance: If you withdraw or are dismissed, ASUN will return any unearned TA funds based on your last date of attendance (LDA). This process follows ASUN's Return to Title IV policy. View the SAP Policy.

Transfer Credit Evaluation Process
- Military Transcripts: Have your official military transcripts (JST, CCAF) sent to the ASUN Office of Admissions.
- Credit Evaluation: ASUN reviews military transcripts for academic credit and/or course waiver based on the American Council on Education recommendations.
